The Adjustment Bureau is a very nice film based on a short story by author Philip K. Dick. It is a science fiction love story about a man so hopelessly in love with a woman that he’s willing to go up against God to have her. A man who just won’t accept what the fates have in store for him. The movie which is somewhat religious raised some questions about life’s destiny. Do we have freewill? Do we control our destiny? Can we truly change the trajectory of our lives or there are unseen forces who can manipulate us?
In the movie, David Norris ( Matt Damon) is a New York politician who loses a bid for the senate seat. On election night he meets a strange woman at the hotel at his party. It’s love at first sight for both of them. She leaves in a rush but he doesn’t get a name or number, or anything. A month later he just so happens to wind up sitting next to her on the bus on his way to work. This time he gets her number and Elise’s (Emily Blunt) name.
Two men strangely start to appear in David’s life. They explain that they work for a bureau that makes corrections when things go slightly wrong. The Bureau informs David that Elise isn’t for him, that a romance between them will dangerously alter some destined path with which they, personally, are clearly unaware. David, however, despite being presented with a rather dissuasive ultimatum, can’t cast Elise aside. However one of the agents from The Adjustment Bureau missed his cue and everything is off plan. From there the film begins and we are taken on an awesome ride.
You will be entertained every moment while watching the movie. It has cool special effects, the sound mix effectively balances the subtle details. It’s a great recommendable film.
In a “TV Patrol” report on July 20, friends of the veteran actress said that Nora decided to postpone her homecoming due to some details that have not yet been finalized.
With this, the guessing game resumes as to when Nora Aunor would return to the country. As reported, the actress did not arrive at Los Angeles airport to board PAL flight 103 to Manila scheduled on July 19, 10 p.m.
Fans and media personnel actually waited in vain at the airport to see the veteran actress off en route to the Philippines.
“Everybody’s waiting for her comeback,” Liberty Salazar said in a news clip report on “TV Patrol,” July 20.
The “TV Patrol” report also said that Nora’s name was included in the July 21 Manila arriving passenger’s manifest.
Meanwhile, friends of the veteran actress shared their concern for Nora, who’s been living in the US for eight years now.
Writer Chito Alcid feels Nora should change her attitude towards work. “‘Yung utak niya idiretso niya. Maging professional [siya] so she can be a productive person dahil nag-iisa siyang Superstar,” he said.
In her recent interview during a despedida party put together for her by friends in the US, Nora shared how she misses her fans in the Philippines.
Alam nila ‘yon. Lalo na’t uuwi ako… hay naku, sarap,” she said.
The “TV Patrol” report said that the Philippine Airlines staff would not divulge if Nora had re-booked her flight to July 27.
News of Nora’s return to the country reached feverish pitch when a despedida party in her honor was reported on “TV Patrol” on July 18.
THE number of Alegria residents suffering from typhoid-like symptoms has increased, according to the Department of Health (DOH) 7.
Elizabeth Tabasa, DOH 7 officer-in-charge, said 142 residents in Barangays Valencia and Madridejos have fallen ill as of yesterday, compared to 81 cases reported last Tuesday.

Health officials conducted random typhi dot tests in the town and found that out of 16 who were tested, seven were found to be positive for the typhoid bacteria, while the rest were negative.
Typhi dot test detects the presence of the Salmonella typhi bacteria in the blood samples of persons suspected to have typhoid fever.
So far, 40 Alegria residents have been confined at the Badian District Hospital (22) and Reinhardt Wirtgen Memorial Hospital (18).
Tabasa said 102 persons sought out-patient treatment. Eight of them went to Badian, 24 to Reinhardt and 70 sought consultation from rural health units in their villages.
Tabasa told Sun.Star Cebu over the phone that the DOH 7 believes that water contamination is the most likely cause of the illness.
She said residents should boil their drinking water for at least five minutes and practice proper hygiene, like washing their hands before eating and after using the toilet.
She said the DOH gave the Municipal Government Aqua Tabs or chlorine tablets to disinfect water sources in the town.
Alegria Mayor Emelita Guisadio, however, said there is no confirmation that town residents have been taken ill because of the salmonella bacterium.
The results of the blood tests have not been released yet),” said Guisadio, adding that some patients have recovered and were sent home.
She said the Municipal Government is using chlorinators to treat water sources in the affected barangay.
Several residents of Barangay Valencia, Alegria reportedly exhibited symptoms associated to typhoid fever.
In December last year, the DOH 7 declared a typhoid outbreak in Alegria. A significant number of typhoid cases was also reported in the town in 2007.
Guisadio said many town residents availed themselves of the medicines and medical consultations initiated by Capitol because these were for free.
Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia yesterday directed the Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) and the Provincial Engineer’s Office to check on Alegria.
Provincial Health Officer Cristina Giango sent a medical team to Alegria yesterday.
Provincial Engineer Eulogio Pelayre, on the other hand, is looking into the town’s water supply project.
Garcia said two years ago, Capitol gave Alegria pipes for its water supply projects.
Valencia Barangay Captain Flora Amatril admitted that many households do not have toilets. But she said the local government distributed toilets to households.
She is not convinced that contaminated water is the cause of the recent cases.
She wondered why some residents in neighboring Barangay Sayaw got sick when they do not share drinking water sources with Barangay Valencia.
Guisadio lamented media reports identifying the recent illness as typhoid when the Regional Epidemiological Surveillance Unit has yet to come up with the test results of the blood samples of patients.
She said several people are sick with fever because of changes in the weather. She added that her child, who lives in Cebu City, has fever, too.
“Naalarma mi aning naabot sa media kay sa amo normal ra ni (We are alarmed by media reports. For us, fever is normal),” Guisadio said.
She said, though, that some people in the town want to declare Alegria under a state of calamity to tap calamity loans and grants.

Solons visit disputed island, China protest
THITU ISLAND – FIVE congressmen visited this island in the disputed Spratlys yesterday, infuriating China which claimed the trip would destabilize the region and damage ties.
The five lawmakers, joined by a small party of soldiers, local officials and journalists, arrived on Thitu island aboard two private planes and raised two Philippine flags above a government building.
Akbayan Rep. Walden Bello said the delegation came to promote a peaceful solution to the territorial dispute, but stressed that Filipinos who know the island as “Pag-asa” are ready to defend “Philippine” territory.
“We come in peace, we support a diplomatic solution. But let there be no doubt in anybody’s mind, in any foreign powers’ mind, that if they dare to eject us from Pag-asa… Filipinos will not take that sitting down,” he said.
“Filipinos are born to resist aggression. Filipinos are willing to die for their soil.”
The visit comes as tensions rise over the Spratlys chain which is wholly or partially claimed by China and the Philippines as well as Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia and Taiwan.
Thitu is the largest of the Philippine-occupied islands in the Spratlys, an archipelago believed to sit on vast natural resources and which also straddles shipping lanes vital to world trade.
About 60 Filipinos live on Thitu, which is just 37 hectares in size and lies about 450 kilometers northwest of Palawan.
Bello brushed aside China’s criticism.
“Maybe they are not used to democratic processes,” he told around 80 people gathered for the flag-raising ceremony.
Malacañang also defended the lawmakers’ visit, saying Filipinos can visit any Philippine territory.
“It’s already a done deal. They did not have to secure the executive’s consent. They went there on their own accord,” Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said. AFP

At her best din siEugene Domingo.

MANILA, Philippines – The maternal uncle of President Aquino passed away yesterday due to cardio-respiratory arrest secondary to multiple organ failure at the Makati Medical Center. He was 83.
Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda announced Pedro Cojuangco died at 10:33 a.m. and the wake will be held at the Cojuangco residence in Forbes Park, Makati City.
“The burial will be on July 26 at the Manila Memorial Park,” Lacierda said.
Cojuangco was the eldest brother of the late former President Corazon Aquino, the President’s mother.
Cojuangco was chairman and president of the Central Azucarera de Tarlac that operates a sugar mill and refining, distilling and carbon dioxide plants in Tarlac City.
Cojuangco was also listed as the chairman of Jose Cojuangco and Sons, which owns 28 percent of Central Azucarera de Tarlac, as well as a building in Legazpi Village, Makati City, that served as the campaign headquarters of Mrs. Aquino in 1986 and as her private office after her term ended in 1992.
“Come out in the open”.
Malacanang yesterday dared former Commission on Elections Commissioner Virgilio Garcillano to emulate former Comelec official Lintang Bedol and come out, saying the noose is tightening on the perpetrators of the electoral fraud in 2004 and 2007 including former President and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
Several senators, notably Sen. Panfilo Lacson, believe that Garcillano is the “missing piece” in the jigsaw puzzle.
Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda also told Arroyo’s counsel Raul Lambino to shut up if he can’t prove his allegations that the Palace has struck a deal with former governor Zaldy Ampatuan.
“[Lawyer Raul Lambino] only talks if his principal is already affected. We already know that the noose is tightening, that’s why he’s trying to misdirect [the issue].”
Lambino also alleged that Malacañang had a deal with Bedol, who recently surfaced to support Ampatuan’s claims that Arroyo planned the massive cheating in the 2004 and 2007 elections.
The Comelec will start investigating today three new witnesses to the poll cheating.
Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo said aside from Bedol, three others – Saliao Amba, Magsaysay Muhamad and Salonga Edzela Tamontaka — executed their affidavits.
Robredo said other witnesses may also come out to reveal what they knew of the poll fraud.
